She was the youngest of eleven children. The mother of her child, Joan, battled breast cancer prior to when Hart along with her younger sister Virginia were born. Her father divorced her at the time that Martha was just a little girl. She earned two degrees at the University of Calgary in Psychology (with distinction) and Sociology (1st-class distinction) before going to England to earn the master’s and PhD on Social and Development Psychology at Cambridge University. She has since been an academic researcher in the field of pediatrics.
